Workforce Development

Job Openings In Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend

When jobs open up, it can be tough for employers to find enough qualified employees. There are many resources available to Corpus Christi residents that encourage workforce development.

Evidence of that effort can be found throughout the city’s industrial areas and various college campuses, including those that provide job seekers in gaining skills in manufacturing, electrical, industrial, and various other skilled trades.

At trade colleges, students gain hands-on experience working with equipment like those they will use on jobs after graduation or certification.

“Our goal here at this facility is to ensure we produce a workforce that stays here,” said Dr. David Fairleigh, president of Coastal Bend College. “We work closely with our industry partners because we want to ensure that the jobs come here and stay here.”

In September, the college will expand its workforce training offerings with a new facility on Old Brownsville Road. In addition to more specialized equipment for advanced manufacturing students, the new building will include classrooms, a laboratory and student commons area.

With so many jobs being created or announced in the last few years – from H-E-B’s massive support center to medical jobs at Spohn – job seekers have a lot of opportunities before them.

One job opportunity at the site is an option for college interns to receive credit through Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU).  This internship allows students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in architecture and civil engineering to receive six hours of credit for their work at the Harbor Bridge project.  The jobs that are available for college interns include working as a project engineer, assistant to engineers, or field technicians.

There are even entry level positions for those with less experience available at the bridge site.  Jobs such as flaggers who support construction traffic by removing obstructions from roads and preventing vehicles from entering restricted areas.

Workforce Development and Industrial Staffing Agencies

As the job market continues to hold strong in Corpus Christi many job seekers are interested in becoming skilled tradespeople, but don’t know how to start. There are several methods for finding out information on what kinds of jobs are available and what they entail, including reaching out to local staffing agencies.
